  3. What is PML? • Portable Multimedia System • Plays audio and video of most formats • 7” VGA LCD display/interface • Download files from home pc to mobile unit in the vehicle • Has extremely large storage(60GB) • Can hold many songs and videos! • Expandable features • Retractable touchscreen display • Retracts into the front console (dash) • Easy to use

  4. Product Overview • PML unit • A small and powerful PC wirelessly networked to home PC • Allows for fast and easy multimedia transfer • Always have your songs and videos on demand • Touchscreen Interface • Replaces mouse based navigation • Allows easy access to select and play media • Power supply • Powered by vehicle’s battery • Has a rechargeable battery pack

  5. PML Unit Motherboard • VIA EPIA M10000 • 1 GHz C3 processor • ‘Nehemiah’ core • mini-ITX form factor(17cmx17cm) • 4 – layer • Onboard audio, video, and LAN • Power: PW-70A (100W)

  6. PML Unit Memory and Storage Devices • Hard drive • Maxtor 60 GB ATA/133 (3.5”) • Memory • Kingston 256 MB PC2100 DDR-RAM (1.2”) • Expandable to 1GB • Optical drive • Toshiba Slimline 8x/24x DVD-ROM

  7. Display

  8. Interface MediaEngine will be used for the user interface (www.mediaengine.org)

  9. Communications… • Both PML and home PC will be equipped with a 2.4 GHz USB wireless network adapter (11 Mbps) • Peer-to-peer connection allows transfer of files from home PC to PML

  10. The Power Supply Vehicle power (12V) PML Unit PW-70A 100W Power supply Power Switching Circuit Rechargeable battery (12V) VGA LCD

  11. Power Switching Circuit

  12. Testability Design Discussion • Software • Virus infections • Operating System hang-ups • Hardware • Over-Heating/heat dissipation • Compatibility issues • Insufficient shock absorption

  13. Testability Design continued • Electrical System • Voltage ranging outside of required voltage parameters • When car battery starts, dip in power resulting in CPU restarting • Insufficient power distribution of components • Current Leakage

  14. Risk Mitigation(Software) • Both host & PML on Windows XP Op. Sys. • Small keyboard might have to be supplied for trouble-shooting purposes. • Interface redesigned by re-coding (Open Source) • Initial Virus check with periodic follow ups

  15. Risk Mitigation(Hardware) • The necessary air flow and fan efficiency adjustments will be made to ensure that proper cooling. • Create code to buffer media files

  16. Risk Mitigation(Cont’d) • Inclusion of a voltage regulator • Redesign circuit to better regulate current • Mechanical components have to be replaced. • Change wireless card (ie. 52 Mbps). • Reposition antenna(s)

  17. System Design • Present Design • Expanded storage • Replaced PCI network card with USB adapter • Increased RAM • Added DVD ROM • Bigger and better display • Increased case size • Decided to place it in/under glove compartment • Remote on/off

  18. Show us the money! • Most of the project will be funded by… • We hope to receive from help from… • VIA systems (Motherboard) • Digital Worldwide (LCD) • Maxtor (Hard drive)

  19. Budgeted vs. Actual Hours
