  1. Native Americans: Dwellings & Adaptations 6th Grade

  2. Plains Indians • Lived in grass lands of the Great Plains of the United States. (dark green) • Food: game animals (bison), vegetables (corn, maize, beans and pumpkins), wild fruits. • Hunters, farmers and gatherers. • They traded with other tribes.

  3. Plains Indian Dwellings • They lived in teepees, which were easy to move.

  4. Woodland Indians • Lived in wooded areas of the east coast of the United States. (light green) • Food: deer, bear, moose, squash, beans and corn. • Hunters, gatherers and farmers.

  5. Woodland Indian Dwellings • They lived in wigwams and longhouses. The Wampanoag were the first tribe to have contact with European explorers.

  6. Northwest Coast Indians • Lived on the coast of the United States and Canada. (red) • Food: mainly fish, bear, caribou, wild berries. • Hunters and gatherers.

  7. Northwest Coast Indian Dwellings • They lived in wooden longhouses, called tlingits, with totem poles.

  8. Southeast Indians • Lived in the south east corner of the United States. (yellow) • Food: fish and wild game (deer), wild fruits and vegetables, shellfish and corn. • Hunters, gatherers, and fishing.

  9. Southeast Indian Dwellings • They lived in chickees, rectangular structures made with wooden poles, bark roofs and plastered with mud.

  10. Pueblo Indians • They lived in the southwest desert portion of the United States. (pink) • Food: Pueblo’s were mostly vegetarian, but they hunted rabbit and squirrel occasionally.

  11. Pueblo Indian Dwellings • They lived in adobe houses. Most of the houses were made from a type of clay mixed with straw. They lived in cliffs to keep cool and to be protected from enemies.
