  2. Polonius the Spy • What does Polonius sending Reynaldo to France to do? Identify and write down the lines that tell us this: • How does Polonius justify this mission (lines 38-65)? Summarize his explanation: • What is Shakespeare showing us (the audience) about Polonius?

  3. Ophelia’s Fright In your group, you will be pantomiming the encounter that Ophelia describes to her father. Read through her description again (line 74-97), and respond to the following prompts: • Describe what Hamlet does and what he looks like: • Suppose how Ophelia might have reacted in the moment (this should be an educated guess): Creating a Pantomime: • In your group of three, you will each have a role: • Student 1 will READ the lines as Ophelia speaks them to Polonius • Student 2 will pantomime Hamlet’s actions as they are read by student 1 • Student 3 will play the scared Ophelia, sewing innocently in her closet, who reacts to the pantomime of Hamlet’s antics Prepare your scene, and then act it out in class before answering the following questions: • What has happened (outside of the action of the play itself) between Hamlet and Ophelia since Act I? Write down the lines that point you to your conclusion: • Knowing this, why do you think that Hamlet choose Ophelia to first display his “antic disposition” to? Why not his mother? His uncle-father? Polonius?
