  5. Introduction Computers have proven to be an effective tool in accomplishing many of today's personal, household, social, and professional information processing tasks. The operating system is a program that tells the computer what to do and how to listen to other software programs such as word processing programs.  Most users utilize the Windows™ operating system developed by Microsoft. The computer is like a ship and Windows™ is the stern that navigates the ship. To effectively use a computer, the user must know how to navigate Windows™ to tell it what to do. Navigation is accomplished by utilizing either the mouse to point and click or by the keyboard to select desired functions. Keyboard shortcuts allow many common functions to be initiated by using one to three keyboard keys rather than using a long series of keyboard strokes. Keyboard shortcuts are useful for the computer user who prefers to use the keyboard as the input device instead of using the mouse, and also for those instances when the mouse may malfunction.
