  2. Position Overview (IC 4-23.7.3) Represent Indiana’s Interests • To federal agencies regarding the NSDI • Serve as primary point of contact with Feds • Facilitate cooperation among federal, state, and local governments • Act as state’s rep for grants

  3. Position Overview (IC 4-23.7.3) Represent State Agencies & Data Center • As Chief Officer for GIS • Review and approve procurement of GIS goods and services • Coordinate the state data center's duties.

Position Overview (IC 4-23.7.3) With Regard To The GIS Data Standards And Data Integration Plan… • Review and either veto or adopt GIS Data Standards and the Data Integration Plan • Act as the administrator of the State Standards and policies • Enforce the GIS Data Standards and Data Integration Plan • Publish the state GIS data standards and the statewide data integration plan. • Publish a biennial report.

Statewide Data Integration Plan Promotes interoperability and open use of data Integrates GIS data and framework data developed and maintained by different units of the federal, state, and local government into statewide coverage of framework data that includes details for: • Data standards and schema, costs, work flow, data transfer mechanisms, update frequency, and maintenance; and • Identification of appropriate data sharing policies and mechanisms to facilitate intergovernmental data exchange, such as data exchange agreements.

Position Overview (IC 4-23.7.3) With Regard To A Statewide Basemap… • Promote development & maintenance of statewide GIS data • Approve and maintain data exchange agreements • Integrate GIS data and framework data into a statewide base map • Provide public access to GIS data throughout Indiana.

  7. Position Overview (IC 4-23.7.3) With Regard To The United States Board On Geographic Names… • Cooperate • Serve as chair of an IGIC committee

  8. Position Overview (IC 4-23.7.3) With Regard To State Educational Institutions… • Use personnel from state educational institutions to provide technical support to the state GIS officer • Coordinate with state educational institutions

Position Overview (IC 4-23.7.3) With Regard To The Indiana Mapping Data and Standards Fund… • The state GIS officer shall administer the fund for GIS grants. • The fund consists of the following: • Appropriations • Gifts, grants, or other money • The expenses of administering the fund shall be paid from money in the fund.

  10. Position Overview (IC 4-23.7.3) With Regard To Restrictive Hardware Or Software Standards… • The state GIS officer may not recommend or restrict standards that a proprietary vendor provides to any political subdivision.

  11. Where we are heading… 2008 initiatives • Consolidate the state campus GIS infrastructure (hardware, software, and data) under GIO/IOT. • Establish a data exchange process between local and state government and integrate local government parcel and other data to create statewide datasets. • Expand public access to GIS data and tools. • Effectively coordinate, collaborate, and lead GIS efforts as defined by IC 4-23-7.3.
