  3. EIONET Established by COUNCIL REGULATION (EEC) No 1210/90 of 7 May 1990 on the establishment of the European Environment Agency and the EIONET • Supporting EEA • Collection and organization of data • Development and dissemination of information

Eionet’s role Supporting EEA in providing sound, independent information on the environment through: • Coordinating data/information flows • Priority data Flows, Core set of Indicators • Providing expertise and advice • EEA assessments/reports • Linking EEA to country sources • Promoting EEA activities and outputs

  6. NRC National Focal Point- NFP NFP National Focal Point NRC • Nominated by national authority as main contacts in the countries • Coordinate national network • Support and promote the EEA activities

  7. National Reference Center (NRC) • A national organisation nominated and funded by the country to work with the EEA and the relevant ETCs and coordinate on national level specific environmental areas related to the EEA work programme represented by a nominated expert/experts • Currently 24 topics (review in 2008/2009)

ETC ETC EEA ETC ETC ETC ETC - European Topic Centre • A consortium of organisations from EEA member countries with expertise in a specific environmental area and contracted by the EEA to support the implementation of the EEA work programme • ETC on Air & Climate Change • ETC on Biological Diversity • ETC on Land Use and Spatial Information • ETC on Sustainable Consumption and Production • ETC on Water

  9. Eionet coordination • Regular NFP/Eionet meetings (3/year) • NRC and ETC meetings • Regular information flows

Eionet review • The current network structure (NRC) and role of NFPs description were defined and approved by Management Board in 2005 • To align the Eionet’s structure and operation with the priorities outlined in the draft EEA-Eionet Strategy 2009-2013 • Process coordinated by Eionet Review group (10 NFPs + EEA) between May 2008 – May 2009 • New structure to be approved in June by MB
