Goal • The goal of these instructions is to raise awareness for the availability of privacy settings for personal photo albums posted on Facebook, and to provide instructions for how to use them successfully. • In November 2008, a photo of Michael Phelps allegedly smoking marijuana surfaced on a social networking website. As a result, this 14-time Olympic gold medalist was forced to make a public apology, costing him important sponsorships and his reputation as a highly sought after a role model. These instructions are designed to introduce you to the intricacies of protecting your Facebook photo albums by adjusting your privacy settings in an effort to limit the occurrence of similar situations. Problem What will you need? • A functional computer with access to the internet • Access to yourFacebook account • A basic understanding of Facebook • A Facebook photo album

  3. Let’s Go! 1. Log in to your Facebook account with your username and password. 2. Click the “Profile” button on the menu.

  4. 3. Click on the “Photos” Tab, shown below: 4. Scroll down to your albums. 5. Click the “Album Privacy” link.

  5. 6. Click the drop-down tab of the desired album. 7. Choose“Customize…”

  6. 8. Choose an option based on your desired privacy level. Note: If you choose the “Some Friends” option, you may make the album visible only to specifically chosen friends. 9. Click “Okay.”

  8. Congratulations! Your photo album is now protected from any of the following: • Classmates • Potential Employers • Your boss • Your family • School faculty • Your significant other • Co-workers • Friends • The Press • Other
