  6. 1.) How did he become President? • Sept 6, 1901 = President McKinley is assassinated. • Sept 14, 1901 = Vice President Theodore Roosevelt is sworn in • Best Know for being a Rough Rider in the Spanish American War How do you think his experience in war will effect his presidency?

  7. 2.) His Character; what type of leader was he? • He was very sick as a child, vowed to “build his body” = overcame his illnesses. Spanish American War Lead the Rough Riders "It is better to try great things, even at the risk of failure, than to know neither victory nor defeat."

Big Business Problem: Trusts (when 2 or more businesses for one large company = decreases competition) Fear?: Companies will be too massive and will take advantage of the people Action: T.R. Takes trusts to court and breaks them up SHERMAN ANTI-TRUST ACT TR is nicknames = “The Trustbuster”

The Coal Strike of 1902 Problem: United Mine Workers (UMW) strike (150,000 workers refuse to work) Fear: Workers special interests would effect other Americans Action: Pushed for arbitration, but UMW wouldn’t cooperate… TR threatens to send the military to work the mines… Union decided to talk.

  15. Story 3.) Land Conservation Problem: Industrialization using up raw materials Fear: That all the beautiful American outdoors will disappear Action: Preserved land…Yosemite, Grand Canyon…today = 57 National Parks

  19. People liked TR so much that they trusted him when he endorsed Taft WON 1908

  21. Good Things about TAFT: • Roosevelt was known as the “Trustbuster”, but really, Taft broke up more trusts (2 times more) Children’s Bureau = investigated and published problems with child labor. Pushed for the passing of the Income Tax, to help fund the Progress.

  22. Not so Good things about TAFT: 1.) Ballinger-Pinchot Controversy (1909) Players = A.) Taft B.) Sec of the Interior = Richard A. Ballinger C.) Gifford Pinchot 1.) Ballinger-Pinchot Controversy (1909) • Ballinger was trying to secretly sell government land to private developers to make $$ • Gifford Pinchot = mad! Leaks the story to the newspapers & Congress 1.) Ballinger-Pinchot Controversy (1909) Taft  fires Pinchot = insubordination Progressives were MAD

  23. Not so Good things about TAFT: 2.) Payne-Aldrich Tariff Act Players = A.) Taft B.) Speaker of the House = Joseph Cannon C.) Finance Committee = Nelson Aldrich

  24. Not so Good things about TAFT: Taft = thinks high tariffs ruin competition Joseph Cannon = not a Progressive…Progressives working to get him out! In order to get tariffs lowered Taft makes friends with Cannon (“I’ll save your job”)!

  25. Not so Good things about TAFT: Conclusion: Congress doesn’t like Taft Bill is pushed through to Senate where Aldrich changes bill = barley lowered tariff and actually increased the cost of some goods. How does this Make Taft Look?
