  1. ARC 313 Building Code II Excavation inspection

  2. Review • The OBC sets the standards that must be followed in Ontario for _____________, ______________ and ______________ of buildings. • construction, demolition and renovation • What 2 areas of the code, allow Municipalities, Cities to adjust / modify some of the standards? • building code act and division C

  3. Review • What 3 main items are required when applying for a permit? • drawings, builder / trade registration and payment fees • In what two ways are buildings classified by the OBC? • size • type of occupancy

  4. Review • What are the standard drawings required when applying for a permit for a new house? • grading plan • site plan • floor plans • elevations • structural plans / sections / details

  5. Answers to module 2 exercise #4 Q 1 • all buildings that do not exceed • 600 m2 in gross area • 3 storeys in height (except those buildings of assembly or institutional occupancy) • single & semi-detached dwellings • every building not described in Division C, table and article 1.2.1.1

  6. Answers to module 2 exercise #4 Q 2 (a) • Yes Q 2 (b) • Division A, clause 1.1.3.1.(1)(a) • Division C, clause 1.2.1.1.(1) Q 2 (c) • Part 9 • Division A, clause 1.1.2.4.(1)

  7. Answers to module 2 exercise #4 Q 3 (a) restaurant with more than 30 occupants • No, classified A-2 occupancy if more then 30 people • Division A, clause 1.1.2.2.(1) • Division B, clause 3.1.2.6.(1) • Appendix , A-3.1.2.1.(1) Q 3 (b) community halls • No • Division A, clause 1.1.2.2.(1) • Division B, clause 3.1.2.1.(1) • Appendix , A-3.1.2.1.(1)

  8. Answers to module 2 exercise #4 Q 3 (c) paint manufacturing plant • No • Division A, clause 1.1.2.2.(1) • Division B, clause 3.1.2.1.(1) • Appendix , A-3.1.2.1.(1) Q 3 (d) warehouse, 580 m2 , less than 3 storeys • Yes • Division A, clause 1.1.2.4.(1) • Division B, clause 3.1.2.1.(1) • Appendix , A-3.1.2.1.(1)

  9. Answers to module 2 exercise #4 Q 3 (e) office building, 595 m2 , less than 3 storeys • Yes • Division A, clause 1.1.2.4.(1) • Division B, clause 3.1.2.1.(1) • Appendix , A-3.1.2.1.(1) Q 4 • No, but • Division C, clause 1.2.2.1 • Division C, clause 1.2.1.1.(4)

  10. Answers to module 2 exercise #4 Q 5 • BCA, 1.1-(7) • BCA, 31.-(1) Q 6 • If serious errors have occurred Q 7 • BCA, 18.-(1)(c) Q 8 • BCA, 18.-(1)(c)

  11. Answers to module 2 exercise #4 Q 8 • thermally designed residential building • Division C, 1.2.1.1.(6) • if the foundations are below the angle of repose • Division C, 1.2.1.1.(5) • buildings that contain a sprinkler protected glazed wall • Division C, 1.2.1.1.(7) • Buildings containing a shelf / rack storage system • Division C, 1.2.1.1.(8) Q 9 • If serious errors have occurred

  12. Answers to module 2 exercise #4 Q 9 (a) • issue an order to bring the construction to meet code requirements • require changes to plans • request a report from a professional • BCA, 12.-(2) Q 9 (b) • issue an order to bring the construction to meet code requirements • BCA, 12.-(2) Q 10 • BCA, 8.(2)

  13. Supplementary Standards • The Supplementary Standards (volume 2) gives specifics as to assemblies for different materials, visual details for some assemblies and more detailed / clarifications of different parts of the code. • The supplementary standards help designers with fire separations, assembly information, load calculation information.

  14. Supplementary Standards exercise #1 • SB-1, deals with climatic & seismic information • snow load, wind, temp, rain • SB-2, fire performance rating • Sect 2 - ratings of materials • Sect 3 - flame spread & smoke for material surface • Sect 4 - non-combustibility of materials • Sect 5 - installation of fire doors, dampers, flaps • SB-3, fire and sound resistance of assemblies • SB-6, percolation time and soil description

  15. Supplementary Standards exercise #1 • SB-7, guard construction criteria • SB-9, soil gas control • radon gases from the earth (9.13.4.2.) • SB-10, energy efficiency supplement

  16. Excavation Inspection • Minimum depths of foundation • type of soil • heated or un-heated space • drainage of soil • depth of freezing • Water on site • must be removed (pumping, well pointing) • caution of nearby buildings • may require barricades • hydrostatic pressure

  17. Excavation Inspection • Soil type • any loose material must be removed • organic material must be removed • must meet minimum allowable bearing pressure • Existing and new services • sewer line locations (high or low) • water line locations (usually pass under footings) • electrical services • Work on exercise #2, Q1 to Q4

  18. Angle of Repose • angle of repose is the steepest angle which the surface of a mass of loose particulate matter makes with the ground • angle of repose is affected by the size, mass, angularity, and dampness of the particles, and by the force of downward acceleration, but it is consistent for a given material • knowing the angle of repose of a material in various circumstances is vital for engineers

  19. Angle of Repose

  20. Angle of Repose (caution) • one way of predicting a failure is if there is a separation/crack in the earth at the top of the bank some distance away from the edge of the excavation • if your foundation is within the angle of repose of an existing building, some sort of support system must be used to protect the existing building and the new footing and foundation may require engineering to resist lateral pressure

  21. Excavation bank failure • Work on Exercise #3 for homework
