  4. English Section B: Writing • Plan carefully: • Who is the audience for your piece? • What is the purpose of the piece? • What format does the question require you to use?

  5. English Section B: Writing • Audience • Check if the questions give you a specific person to address • You need to: • grab their attention • gain their trust • convince them that you are right

  6. English Section B: Writing • Purpose • Make sure you have understood what the question is asking you to do. • Do what the question asks you to do.

English Section B: Writing • Format • If you are asked to write a letter, make sure your answer looks and sounds like a letter. • If you are asked to write a magazine article, make sure your answer looks and sounds like a magazine article. • If you are asked to write an advertisement, make sure your answer looks and sounds like an advertisement.

  8. English Section B: Writing • The questions will give you a purpose such as the following: • ARGUE; INFORM; • INSTRUCT; EXPLAIN; • PERSUADE; ENTERTAIN; • ADVISE; COMMENT; REVIEW

  9. English Section B: Writing • Sometimes two areas can be combined in one question, e.g., • Your local community wants to ban plastic bags in local shops. Write a letter to local shop owners where you ARGUE for the ban andADVISE them on the best ways to make it work.
