  1. Warm-Up # 8 8/29/12 1) What are the basic units of measurement? 2) Which is bigger: KL or mL ? 3) Which is smaller: CM or M ? 4) Is 4.5 g bigger or smaller then 5000 mg?

  2. Warm-Up # 8 8/29/12 1)When moving from a larger unit to a smaller unit, you move your decimal to the ________. 2) What are the basic units?_______________ 3) The metric system is based on multiples of__ 4) Convert 807 g to __________kg 5) Convert 0.12 Km to _____________m

  3. Measurements

  4. What we’re learning… • Essential Question: • Why is a common system of measurement necessary? • Objectives: • Convert unit of measurements using the metric system

  5. Measurement—Scientists use a common system to… • Perform experiments • To be able to combine their work.

  6. The Metric System • Scientists use it for: • Data collection • Performing experiments • Decimal system of measurement • Based on multiples of 10 • Now called the International System of Units: SI

  7. Metric vs. English

  10. 1. To make a conversion: • Move the decimal place • Move it to the left if you are going from smaller to larger units. • Move it to the right if you are going from larger to smaller units.
