  2. Long Term Causes • Mercantilism- using colonies for her natural resources

  3. Navigation Acts (1660) • Enacted to tighten England’s control of trade in the colonies • Had to transport using British ships • Could only trade with England or other English colonies.

  4. Writs of Assistance • A legal document that served as a search warrant. This document allowed British officers to inspect shops, warehouses, ships and private homes to put a stop to smuggling.

  5. Self Government • House of Burgesses • Mayflower Compact • Fundamental Orders of Connecticut The colonies had been left alone by England for so long (SALUTARY NEGLECT), they didn’t like her suddenly making the rules.

  6. The Honeymoon’s Over Relative happiness and peace… ends in 1753 with the beginning of the French and Indian War. England sends troops to defend the colonies. British VS. French and Native Americans.

  7. Albany Plan of Union • Proposed by Ben Franklin • The first plan to place the British colonies under one central government.

  9. Proclamation Line of 1763 • Forbid English colonists to live west of the Appalachian Mountains. This land will be reserved for the Native peoples.

  10. Quartering Act (1765) • Authorized British to house soldiers in private homes • Led to 3rd Amendment

  11. Stamp Act (1765) • Required colonists to attach expensive tax stamps to all newspapers, stationary, and legal documents

  12. Stamp Act Congress • Nine colonies met to discuss responses to the Stamp Act. • Declared that colonial taxation could only be made by colonial assemblies. • Result- Stamp Act was repealed quickly by Parliament.

  13. Sons of Liberty • Secret organization formed to protest the Stamp Act. • Harassed tax collectors • Founded by Sam Adams • Responsible for the Boston Tea Party

  14. Boycotts • Merchants in NY, Boston, and Philadelphia agreed to boycott British goods until the Stamp Act was repealed.

  15. Townshend Acts (1767) • Levied (placed) new taxes on imported goods • These were goods colonists needed but could not supply for themselves

  16. Boston Massacre • Five civilians were killed by British soldiers, including Crispus Attucks, an African-American servant. • So what really happened? • Do you believe Revere’s or the British paper’s story?

  17. Boston Tea Party • Direct protest by colonists of Boston against Tea Act. • Led by the Sons of Liberty, a group of colonists destroyed tea by throwing it into Boston Harbor.

  18. Coercive Acts (1774) • Called Intolerable Acts by colonists • King’s reaction to the Boston Tea Party • Colonists reacted by holding First Continental Congress • Restricted rights including trial by jury

  19. Battles of Lexington and Concord • First military engagement of the Revolutionary War. • Second Continental Congress meets in Philadelphia to discuss response. • “Shot heard ‘round the world”

  26. Common Sense • Published in January 1776 • Written by Thomas Paine • Argued that it was “common sense” for the colonies to declare independence “Without the pen of Paine, the sword of Washington would have been wielded in vein.”

  28. Declaration of Independence • A statement written mostly by Thomas Jefferson. Announced that the 13 colonies were now independent states, and no longer a part of Great Britain.
