  2. POLITICS: • The process of making decisions by resolving differences (negotiating, building coalitions, debating and following majority vote) POLITICAL SCIENCE: • The study of various forms of government and the process by which they operate.

  3. Basic Services a Government Provides: • Establish and enforce law and order • Protect land and people from internal and external problems • Regulate the economy and commerce • Provide services (ex: education, communication, transportation)

  4. DEMOCRACY: • A government in which the people rule directly and the government is in place to serve the people. TOTALITARIANISM: • A centralized government with absolute control by one political party or person

  5. POWER: • The strength required to take control and possession of control. “Power is taken, not given” (guns rule) AUTHORITY: • Legitimate ability to rule. “Authority is given, not seized” (voted in)

  7. ANARCHY • No government at all ARISTOCRACY • Aristos = most virtuous, noblest, finest • Rule by the “finest” (the wealthy) THEOCRACY • Theo = god • Rule by a religious group (believed to be granted power by god)

  8. DIRECT DEMOCRACY • Government in which the people rule themselves REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY • Government in which the policies are made by officials who are accountable to the people that elected them

  9. TOTALITARIAN DICTATORSHIP • Complete control of the government by one person TOTALITARIAN OLIGARCHY • Complete control of government by a few, often seizing power after a revolution

  10. CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY • King or queen rules with limitations on power. • Power is shared with a parliament or congress ABSOLUTE MONARCHY • King or queen rules with complete control independent of representatives of the people

LEFT WING LIBERAL • Support for progress & reforms, new ideas and plans • Open to new ideas or not strict in the observance of old ideas • Favors an active role for gov’t in business and in people’s lives • Protection of civil and political liberties • Taxes are ok for programs • Democratic Party • F.D. Roosevelt, Kennedy, Clinton, Obama

  15. MODERATE • “Middle of the Road” • Combination of both liberal and conservative views • Majority of Americans • Eisenhower, Ford
