Sex • the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women can be physical-presence of penis, vagina, or absence/presence of both • endocrinological-presence of testosterone or estrogen • chromosomal-presence or absence of Y chromosome, X chromosome, or multiple X or missing X chromosomes • Klinefelter’sSyndome (XXY) • example- female, male, intersexual

  7. Gender • Socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women men play with trucks and girls play with dolls

  15. Taking Up Space • Women are becoming smaller and smaller influences how men and women think about themselves.

  16. Today 10 million women suffer from eating disorders. • The US population is 300 million people, presumably 150 million women. • That means about 6% of all US women suffer from anorexia and bulimia. • But this is also problematic for men who cannot achieve this body image naturally as well.

  17. “Out-of-Body Image” • Self-objectification – viewing the female body as a sex object • Looking through the eyes of the “male gaze” • Impression - body is a project needed to be worked on to impress others • trouble imagining identity/sexuality truly your own • Negative behavioral effects – low self-esteem, depression, eating disorders • In the US alone, nearly 10 million women suffer from anorexia and bulimia • problematic also for men who can’t achieve body image naturally as well

  21. Definition • Male Privilege- The advantage male-bodied people have in this societybecause of sexism. Often this term refers to more subtle forms of privilegethan simply higher pay, more voice in politics/business, and other rightstraditionally enjoyed by men.

Victims of Sexual Assault Are… • 3 times more likely to suffer from depression. • 6 times more likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. • 13 times more likely to abuse alcohol. • 26 times more likely to abuse drugs. • 4 times more likely to contemplate suicide. • 54% of rapes/sexual assaults are not reported to the police, according to a statistical average of the past 5 years. • Those rapists, of course, never spend a day in prison. • Factoring in unreported rapes, only about 3% of rapists ever serve a day in jail.
