2. Personal Safety & You • Campus safety is a shared responsibility. There are many things that you can do to keep yourself safe and make the campus community safer.

3. Fundamentals • Study the campus for routes between your apartment and classes. Know where phones are located. • Always travel in groups after dark. Never walk alone at night. Avoid shortcuts! • Gauge the social scene. Are people behaving responsibly, or does the situation seem reckless? Notify the appropriate authorities if the situation is getting out of hand.

4. Residence Halls • Always lock your apartment! • Do not loan out your key! • Always lock your windows at night. • Do not leave your ID, wallet, checkbook, camera or cell phone in open view. • Know your neighbors and don’t be reluctant to report illegal activities or suspicious loitering. • Insist that RA’s and SA’s routinely check for “propped doors,” both day and night.

5. Identity Theft You can protect yourself from identity theft by taking several simple precautions: • Don't give out your Social Security number. And don't use your SSN as an ID number or password. • Don’t leave check books, bank statements or credit cards laying around. • Shred or destroy all bills and statements that have your account numbers on them. • Do not shop on the web unless you are on a genuinely secure site. • Do not display personal and financial information in e-mails. • Do not answer emails from unknown senders.

6. Cars & Parking Lots • Lock your car and take the keys with you. • Lock valuables in the trunk. • Make sure that your windows are rolled up. • Park in well lit areas of campus. • Don’t fumble in your pocket or purse for your keys, have them ready and in your hand before you reach your car or home.

7. In Shops & Labs • Wear all required safety equipment: hearing protection, safety glasses, safety vests, hard hats, hard toed boots and gloves. • Make sure that there is a 36 inch clearance around exits and electrical panels. • Always make sure that you use equipment according to your instructors directions. • Never disengage safety devices on equipment. • Never use electrical devices with frayed cords. • Keep your work station clean and free of clutter.
