  2. Aims of the presentation • To give an overview of Northern Counties College • To discuss learning opportunities at the college • To answer questions from workshop participants

  3. Background • Came about through Percy Hedley & Northern Counties merging • First students – November 2005 • Officially opened on 31 January 2006 • Main campus at Northern Counties and able to access other Percy Hedley sites

  4. College year • The college is open for 38 weeks of the year as a college • Funding for this is usually provided through Young Persons Learning Agency (YPLA)

  5. Students • Our areas of specialism are students with • significant and complex neurological impairment • motor or sensory impairment • hearing impairment • learning difficulties • speech, language or communication difficulties • autistic spectrum.

  6. Student Numbers • 2005/6 15 students • 2006/7 35 students • 2007/8 55 students • 2008/9 56 students • 2009/10 50 students • 2010/11 55 students

  7. Mission • ‘A college for a better life.’ • Our mission at Northern Counties College is to enhance the life chances of young disabled people by developing opportunities together.

  9. Courses • We build our courses around the needs of individual students. • In order to facilitate this our curriculum is broadly split into 4 sections – • Independent living skills • Vocational and Employment skills • Communication skills • Technology

  10. Life Skills Programme at Northern Counties College. The Life Skills Curriculum is focused on the following areas: • Independent Living Skills • Travel and Transport • Learner Involvement • Community Involvement

  11. Work Skills Programme at Northern Counties College. The Work Skills Curriculum is focused on the following areas: • Business Administration • Catering • Horticulture • Arts and Media

Transition • We believe that our students should leave the college better equipped for living independent lives. • In order to support this aim we will undertake a number of activities with students such as – • suitable and safe work experience placements for each student each year • Transition planning with social workers, carers, Connexions advisors, local learning providers and transition coordinators • Individualised support and guidance
