  1. J.F. Hauser, Becoming The Best You Can Be!, USA: Williamsonbooks,2006

  2. Cesar Chavez could have been an angry man. Cesar’s family lost its farm in Arizona when he was a child. His family became migrant farm workers. They travelled from farm to farm to harvest crops. Cesar attended more than 30 schools, and then left school after eight grade to work fulltime in the fields. Life was harsh for the migrant workers, and they were very poor.

  3. Cesar knew that if workers got angry and fought violently for change, lives would be lost. In addition, people would not respect the farm workers. So Cesar and the workers controlled their anger. They joined together to let the world know of the hardships and injustices they faced. Cesar founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers of America (UFW).

  4. The UFW was America’s first farm workers’ union (an organisation of workers that promotes better conditions). The UFW called strikes* and boycotts^. And Cesar fasted, when he didn’t eat for many days to bring attention to his cause. These actions were all powerful, yet peaceful ways of demanding better and fair treatment. *the workers walked off the job to protest the working conditions. ^ people were asked not to buy California grapes, wine and lettuce to show their support for the migrant workers.

  5. Thanks to Cesar’s leadership, growers agreed to work with the UFW to improve conditions. Cesar had a confident motto - It Can Be Done. And he did it through controlled and peaceful actions.

  6. Reflections…… • What do you think would have happened if Cesar and the workers did not control their anger • Do you agree with Cesar’s motto – It Can Be Done ? How do you think his motto helped him in his fight for better working conditions?
