  1. Isaac Kremer Student Housing Listing System Proposal Shorecliff College

  2. System Overview * Support Costs Unknown, determined by hours needed and IT Support staff used for 5 years

  3. In-House Development • Benefits: • Custom developed software to precisely fit listing system needs • Immediate deployment • Cheaper to develop

  4. In-House Development (Cont.) • Costs: • Two IT analysts dedicated to develop software • $40/hour to develop and provide training materials, and training for IT Support staff • Unknown support costs

  5. Vertical Software Package • Benefits: • Pre-assembled software • Free on-site day of training • Free technical support for one year

  6. Vertical Software Package • Costs: • $9,000 initial costs • 4-weeks full-time to install, configure, and test software • Mandatory technical support agreement at $1,000/year for 4 years

  7. Mandatory Costs $3,000 in Hardware Upgrades $5,000 in Networking Upgrades

  8. Economic Feasibility • Current cost to create listings (approx.) • 25 hours of overtime per month at $22/hour • 25 hours x ($22/hr x 1.5 overtime) x 12 months = $9,900/year • Current cost to maintain listings (approx.) • 20 hours per month at $12/hour • 20 hours x $12/hr x 12 months = $2,880/year Current listing system costs per year = $12,780

  9. Economic Feasibility (Cont.) • Total current rental receipts = $340,000 • Rent increased 4% every year • Estimated loss of revenue to listing problems = 3% $10,200 approximate lost revenue last year $10,608 approximate lost revenue this year $12,410 approximate lost revenue in 4 years

  10. Economic Feasibility (Cont.)

  11. In-House - Prototyping? • Prototyping – • Produces an early, rapidly constructed working version of the proposed information system, called a prototype • Allows the user to examine a model that accurately represents the proposed system • Lets the user provide input and feedback at every stage during the development process

  12. In-House - Prototyping? (Cont.) • Pros: • Housing office manager is willing to work with us in development through prototyping. • Allows developers to know what the user wants and needs in the program • Helps provide a foundation for each “next stage” in the development process • Could increase program usability and functionality

  13. In-House - Prototyping? (Cont.) • Cons: • Longer development times in creating each prototype • User/programmer disagreements • Potential quality problems • Accurate testing not guaranteed during prototyping

  14. In-House - Prototyping? (Cont.) • Conclusion: If we were to choose to create In-House software for the Housing Listings System we should use prototyping. Communication between the manager at the housing office and the developers could help create a more custom-fit software, and could help develop a program that would better suit the needs of the housing department.
