What is Diversity/Multicultural Education? • What is diversity? • External Characteristic are not just related to race and ethnicity. • What is Culture? • The customary beliefs, social forms and material traits of racial, religious or social groups. • The melting pot has been replaced by the tossed salad.

  3. Let’s Examine the Importance of Bilingual Education • Over 400 different native languages are represented in the American school system. • Familiarity ranges from some to none. • Language minority students lack access to academic opportunity. • “No Child Left Behind” must mean all children.

  4. It is important to present the curriculum in a way that a child can connect the knowledge with their individual life. Integrate multiple learning styles into the classroom. Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, Musical, Logical, Intra/Inter Personal, and Naturalistic Celebrate Differences and allow for opportunities to learn from each other. Integrate culture-centered teaching strategies. Do not stereotype. Develop your own self-fulfilling prophecy that each child is important and are expected to perform at their full potential. Celebrate the Differences Between Your Students • Re-examine your own biases. • Objectively identify each child’s needs, goals and learning styles. • Encourage parents or family members to share their culture with the class. • Bridge culture, importance of knowledge and relevance of education. • Grow and learn yourself. You are the greatest model to the children- Celebrate The Differences!
