  1. Hitachi’s activities Focus on IPv6 network December, 2000 Naoya Ikeda Enterprise Server Division Hitachi, Ltd.

  2. Contents • Policy of Hitachi’s activities on IPv6 • Toolnet6, contribution • GR2000, for business backbone • Issues: for the next stage

  3. Policy of Hitachi’s activities on IPv6 • Smooth Migration solution • IPv4-IPv6 connectivity • Existing applications over IPv6 • Minimize cost to early adopter • Interoperability ready • Stability, reliability for business backbone • Preparation to “Next Stage”

  4. Hitachi’s activity about IPv6 (1) • Hitachi has been developed IPv6 routers for 5 years. • Early stage (1996-1997) interoperability testing in UNH. • Hitachi NR60 router, a frontier product of IPv6. • IPv4, IPv6, BGP4+, IPv4-IPv6 Protocol translation, IPsec etc. • Toolnet6 is distributed as free software by Hitachi. • Driver software to support IPv6 on Windows95/98 PCs. • IETF contribution. e.g. RFC2767(Bump-in-the-Stack). • A member of KAME project. • A member of IPv6 Forum

  5. IPv4 applications (Telnet, Ftp, Mail, Web…..) OS IPT DNS TCPv4 IPv6 Windows 98 Windows NT Windows 2000 IPv4 6Bone IPv4/v6 Network Card Driver Toolnet6 Windows PC IPv6 Server NIC IPv6 Software for Windows (Toolnet6) • A tool Software to use existing Windows(R) applications over IPv6. • Enhancement on Network Interface Card driver software • Free distribution from Hitachi home page • http://www.hitachi.co.jp/Prod/comp/network/pexv6-j.htm • RFC2767(Bump-in-the-Stack)

  6. Hitachi’s activity about IPv6 (2) • Gigabit router GR2000 IPv6 software has been released for trial networks. • More than 50 units of GR2000 are used in IPv6 networks • Highlight: Networld + Interop 2000 TOKYO. • At the Showcase Network, connecting with MicroSoft, Cisco etc. • GR2000 was used as a IPv6 external router. • The grand prize in the section of carrier infrastructure construction product.

  7. Hitachi Gigabit Router “GR2000”for Business Backbone • Carrier-grade Reliability • Standard Driven Software • High Speed forwarding • up to 40Mpps • OC-48,OC-12,Gigabit Ethernet • Hardware-based Multicast • Hardware-based traffic control • Filtering • QoS/Diffserv Today, these features for IPv4 network... 4S Model 2S 6H 20H 10H Enterprise Network Carrier/ISP/NSP Network

  8. GR2000 IPv6 (Current Status) • GR2000 IPv6 software is based on KAME stack • Software based with some hardware assist • Keep IPv4 high-speed forwarding at the same time • More than 50units, 20 sites, 10users using GR2000 • Standard Driven • RFC2460:Internet Protocol, Version 6(IPv6) • RFC2473:Packet Tunneling • RFC2080:RIPng • RFC2858,2545: Extensions for BGP-4 • RFC2462:Address autoconfiguration • RFC1972, 2472 2492 :IPv6 packets over Ethernet,PPP,ATM • RFC2465,2466,2452,2454:MIB • etc.

  9. Main Processor Routing Processor Routing Processor Network Interface Network Interface IPv6 Packet Data GR2000 (Current: IPv4+IPv6) GR2000 router architecture • Software Upgrade Solution for early adopters • IPv4 packets are forwarded by Hitachi proprietary hardware. • Main Processor forward IPv6 packets • IPv6 forwarding is based on software with some hardware logic. • No performance penalty to IPv4 network • Low cost to start for early adopters with investment protection • Flexibility to add IPv6 additional functions Routing Protocols IPv6 Packet Forwarding Switch IPv4 Packet Forwarding Network-A IPv4 Packet Data Network-B

  11. Issues: for the next stage • “Always-on” explosion will come 2002-2003 Mobile-phone (with video data), World-Wide-Wireless • Broadband video-data stream on IPv6 network • What happen ? What need ? (to routers) • High speed forwarding and QoS, like IPv4 or more! • High speed Security • High speed load balancing for huge “Internet Data Center” • Hitachi has started development for the next stage, “B to H” concept data-center router. • Broadband to Home • Business to Home

  12. What is difference between “B to C” and “B to H” Just my definition, • B to C (IPv4 based): • Consumers intentionally access the Internet. e.g.”trading” • Access traffic is not so heavy, even if “Always-on”. • Almost consumers will be moderate to access the Internet. • B to H (IPv6 and “Always-on” based): • Almost people access the Internet without intention of “network access”. e.g.”TV watching”,”Bi-directional game” • Sometimes, tremendous traffic will be generated. • Some people may make damage on the network system with a malicious intent.

  13. IP telephone Requirement for “BtoH” to routers A B Internet Data Center Fundamental requirement System-oriented requirement • Hi speed load balance • High speed encryption/decryption • Discarding malicious heavy traffic • etc • High speed IPv6 packet forwarding • High speed IPv6 QoS • High speed and high density of • line interface • etc. Internet Automobile Mobile IP telephone TV Game computer PC

  14. As a member of the “Super Internet Project” • “Super Internet Project” is one of Japanese government projects for IT strategy. • anyone, anytime, anywhere,as much as ... • MPT/TAO project • As a member of the “Super Internet Project”, Hitachi has started to develop new router technology for the B to H “System-oriented requirement”. • Also, Hitachi has already started to develop router enhancement for the “Fundamental requirement” as a high speed router vender.

  15. Conclusion • Hitachi has been one of the leaders of IPv6 development and deployment community. • More than 50 units of GR2000 have already been used in our customer trial networks. • Hitachi has started to development for the next stage of IPv6, especially router technology for “B to H” concept network. Thank you !
