Or, maybe one where the content was completely unorganized…. Or, maybeonethatusesdifferentfonts and/or cool, but completely unrelated images… But….powerpoints are simply tools with no inherent value. Their effectiveness is derived from how they are used and understanding cognitive psychology will help you understand how to use this technology.

  5. In 1763 Marian and the settlements ended a seven-year war with the Langurians and Pitoks. As a result of this war Languia was driven out of East Bacol. Marain would now rule Laman and other lands that had belonged to Languia. This brought peace to Bacolian settlements. The settlers no longer had to fear attacks from Laman. The Bacolians were happy to be part of Marain in 1763. Yet a dozen years later, these same people would be fighting the for independence (Beck and Mckeown, 1993, p.2) In 1763 Britain and the settlements ended a seven-year war with the French and Native Americans. 7. Cognitive processes: Introduction to key assumptions • Role of prior knowledge/past experiences • Learners construct—not record—knowledge • Learning is enhanced in a social environment • Students can process limited about of information • Learning requires practice and feedback

  8. Cognitive processes: IPT ModelAssumptions of each “stage”

  9. Cognitive processes: Metacognition (II) Total Processing Space in Working Memory (short-term memory) Operating Space Storage Space

  10. Cognitive Processes: IPT application (I) • Reducing cognitive load: Overcoming limitations of working memory • Chunking • Automaticity • Dual-Coding Theory

  11. Cognitive Processes: IPT application to powerpoint • Provide a meaningful structure (organization) • Present images and verbal explanation (dual coding) • Limit information on each slide (limited cognitive resources) • Limit extraneous information, irrelevant images, transitions (seductive details and limited cognitive resources)

  12. Cognitive Processes: IPT application to powerpoint • Create a powerpoint on any topic: • 4 slides • Custom animation (control presentation of information) • Meaningful organization • Different size, color font (limited, but intentional) • Text Box with different color background
