  3. ABOUT THE ST. JAMES FOUNDATION “Where the vision of a community begins!” In September of 1997, the Reverend Dr. Charles C. Heyward, Senior Pastor of the Saint James Presbyterian Church USA, hosted a meeting of local pastors to discuss the concern of economic growth on James Island. The focus of this meeting was to explore how African-American congregations might join together and implement a plan for the future. The Foundation began with five church leaders who organized themselves for the purpose of educating Saint James Presbyterian Church members about economic development and using the biblical mandate to be good stewards of all God’s gifts (spiritual and financial). It was not long before the need to reach beyond “one church” and beyond any single denomination became evident. For the truth proclaimed in the gospel compels us to uplift all of God’s people.
