  1. Academic Team Informational Meeting Mrs. Duvall Head Coach

  2. Academic Team Format • Quick recall (Varsity and JV) • Teams of four compete against each other. • There are fourtyquestions consisting of tossup and bonuses. • Matches last 30 minutes or until all questions have been asked. • There is one half-time consisting of five to seven minutes. • Students have five seconds to answer a tossup question and ten seconds to answer a bonus question. • Students who buzz in with the correct answer are awarded points for their team. • Each team as a captain which will answer bonus questions. • Team with most points wins the match.

  3. Format • Written Assessment • Subjects: Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, Arts and Humanities. • Students may test in two subjects. • Varsity students have fifty minutes for each test. • JV students have fifty minutes for both tests. • Future Problem Solving • Students work out future problems and design steps in solving those problems. • Environmental, societal, economical

  4. Our District • Students will participate in quick recall and written assessments against other schools within our district. • OVAL- Ohio Valley Academic League • Bullitt East, Bullitt Central, North Oldham, Oldham, Elizabethtown, Fort Knox, and Spencer Co

Team Members • Varsity Team Members • Consists of 11th and 12th graders. • May include 9th and 10th if don’t have enough to compete. • Will participate in regular season, Round Robin and Governor’s Cup. • Junior Varsity Team Members • Consists of 9th and 10th graders. • Can be moved up to Varsity if need more members to compete.

  6. Round Robin • Varsity team only. • Compete against our district only. • Students will compete in quick recall. • This event is usually held in December. • Varsity participants may also compete in Governor’s Cup.

  7. Governor’s Cup • Governor’s Cup has three levels: Districts, Regionals and State. • Each school brings their top players. • Students can only participate in three events. • Students will compete in quick recall, written assessment, future problem solving and English composition. • Both Varsity and chosen JV members can compete. • The top five of each written assessment, English will advance to the next round (regional or state). • Winning quick recall teams will also advance to the next round. • Districts are usually held in late January. • Regional are usually held in February. • State is usually March.

  8. Grade Eligibility • Student must have a 3.0 GPA • Students will be added to the Eligibility sheet at school. • Must be passing five classes to compete at matches or will be placed on academic probation.

  9. Academic Probation • If failing in TWO classes: • Student will attend practices but use the time as study hour until grade goes up • Student must get grade up by next match to participate in match. • Student will have two matches to raise their grade(s) up or student will be removed from the team.

  10. Practices Mondays (2:15-3:30) Mondays (2:15-3:30) • Quick Recall and Written Assessment (Mrs. Duvall) • Mondays • Practices will alternate between quick recall and written assessment • Parents/Students can provide snacks, to be eaten at beginning of practice. • Every member must learn how to use the machine, keep score, read questions and serve as the spotter. • Future Problem Solving (TBD) • Students who are only involved in FPS must attend • Team must consist of 4 team members with an alternate.

  11. Home Matches (5:00-8:00pm) • Mondays • NBHS Library • Parents will sign up to be written assessment proctors, score keepers and time keepers. • Students will bring $3 for pizza and drinks BEFORE school to Mrs. Duvall to order by match time.

  12. Team Uniform • NBHS T-shirt/Khaki pants • Students without uniform at matches will not compete • Student dues will include a team shirt.

  13. Communication • Students can sign-up to receive text alerts for any Academic Team information. • Students will have a username • First Name with Last Initial • I have to approve users, to make sure you follow the username format! • Text @NBHSAcademicTeam to 23559 to get text alerts.

  14. Attendance Policy • Students are expected to attend all matches and practices. • Practices • Three consecutive unexcused practices missed. Student is kicked off team. • Five total unexcused practices missed by Round Robin in December. Will result in dismissal from team.

  15. Attendance: Matches • If last practiced missed was an unexcused absence, student will not participate in quick recall but expected to attend and compete in written assessment. • If student does not show up to support team, they will not compete at quick recall in match but will test written assessment. • Two consecutive matches unexcused absence: • Student is kicked off team. • Three total matches missed. EXCUSED OR UNEXCUSED. • Student is kicked off team

Excused absences (from practices/matches) • Absent from school • Went home sick/left for family emergencies • Making up a test/work with a teacher • Doctor appointments (please work around schedule) • Sports (if involved in sports, all coaches involved will need discuss schedule conflicts) • Band/Choir (if involved, all coaches involved will need discuss schedule conflicts)

  17. Unexcused absences (from practices/matches) • Attending a match without uniform will count as an unexcused absence. • Dentition • Work • NO SHOW • If student does not tell Mrs. Duvall prior to practice/match of absence it will be considered as a NO SHOW, and will be unexcused absence.

  18. Transportation • Students may ride with parents to matches if there isn’t enough room in the vans, AND a permission slip has been signed by parent. • Students need to present note from parent with permission to ride home with someone else from an away match.

  19. Dues Student Dues NBHS Team Dues • $75 per student • Payment Plan • Need money by first match • All dues collected pay for OVAL, and Governor’s Cup for the year. • Team T-Shirts • Oval $660 dues, to be paid in September • If dues are not paid the team will not participate in any Academic competition. • Governor’s Cup $345 dues, to be paid by March.   20. Fundraisers • Any fundraiser will be a mandatory event; all students must participate. • If student doesn’t want to participate in fundraisers, they will pay extra on top of their dues. • The cost of operating the team will be divided by total number of team members. The additional money will be added to their dues. • Team Fundraisers: • Poinsettias • Gifted & Talent Camp

  21. Expectations for Academic Team Parents • Be helpful and supportive of students and coaches. • Allow me to do my job of coaching the team as I see fit. • Respect the coach’s decisions and actions. • Do not spread negativity. • Always inform coach of any issues/problems first, do not go over coaches head. • Do not force child to be on Academic team, must be child’s choice. • Provide contact information with daytime email address. • Put into effect the phone tree when necessary. • Agree to and support the policies outlined in the Academic Team Manual. • Pay student dues. • Attend any parent meetings to discuss upcoming events.

  22. Expectations for Academic Team Members • Have a positive attitude. • Respect coaches and other team members. • Agree to and support the policies in outlined the Academic Team Manual. • Attend all practices and matches. • If absent inform Mrs. Duvall in advance. • Participate in all fundraisers or pay extra dues. • Wear uniform to all matches. • Be passing 5/6 classes. • HAVE FUN! 

  23. Expectations from coaches • Respect team members and parents. • Maintain good communication with parents and students. • Notify via email/school announcements or celly text alerts of any cancellations wit practices/matches. • Responsible for: • Team transportation • Food (ordering pizza for matches) • Banquet • Fundraisers • Awards Night
