  2. JANUARY The democratic primaries began kicking off the election trail. Space Rover lands on Mars. Spirit sends back images of the red planet.

  3. FEBRUARY More than 85 couples received marriage licenses in San Francisco. Scientists in South Korea cloned human embryos and removed embryonic stem cells.

  4. MARCH Martha Stewart is convicted on four counts of obstruction of justice. She is later sentenced to five months in prison and $30,000 fine. John Muhammad sentenced to death for his role in the 2002 Washington, DC, area shootings and his accomplice, Lee Malvo, to life without parole.

  5. APRIL World War II Memorial opens in Washington, D.C. The Abu Ghraib Prison Abuse Scandal was discovered after pictures were made public.

  6. MAY The Senate opposes the new overtime regulations proposed by the Department of Labor. The Supreme Court reopens the 1955 Murder Case of the Civil Rights era murder of Emmet Till after a documentary about the 14 year-old’s death.

  7. JUNE President Ronald Reagan died after a long battle against Alzheimer's disease at age 93. Judge calls the 2003 Partial Birth Abortion ban unconstitutional because it lacks a medical exception to save a woman's life and it places an unnecessary burden on women who seek abortions.

  8. JULY Secretary Veneman lifts band on logging in National Forests. Construction of Freedom Tower begins at the former site of the World Trade Center Towers.

  9. AUGUST Statue of Liberty reopens monument for the first time since September 11, 2001 attacks. Florida pounded by Hurricanes Bonnie and Charley, followed later by Frances, Ivan and Jeanne.

  10. SEPTEMBER Judge invalidates parts of Patriot Act stating it violates constitutional laws against unreasonable searches. Kobe Bryant case dropped due to lack of cooperation from accuser.

  11. OCTOBER Boston Red Sox win the 2004 World Championship Baseball Series ending “The Curse of the Bambino” winning for the first time since 1918. Mt. St. Helens erupts for first time in almost decades with no injuries or damage reported.

  12. NOVEMBER President Bush reelected without the court battle many believed would decide the election. Voters in California pass funding for stem cell research.
