  1. Maths Week - A plus point for college Student Council -It’s All About Us! A group of students from Dovestones meet each month as part of the student council to give students their say. The group meet in the common room for about half an hour to talk and make plans. Alex Rewcastle, is chairman of the council, which organises events and helps students to solve their problems. The most recent event organised by the group was Children in Need. Events at the college raised £115.25 for the charity. Alex said: “It’s all about us.” Meet the Editorial Team The Dovestones Express editorial team is (back row) Amran and Ian, and (front row) Alex, Josh, Harry and Amanda. Dovestones Express Everyone at Tameside College has taken part in Maths Week. From November 25th to 29th, students worked on different maths activities including photographic journeys using directional language, challenges like beanbag count, magnetic darts and timed walks. Student Amanda Sutcliffe said: “I enjoyed taking pictures in college and the photographic journey.” An entry level literacy and numeracy group at Dovstones College has worked together to create this edition of the Dovestones Express. The group has worked with journalist, Alison Barton-Simmons, to come up with their own story ideas. The newsletter will be given out to schools, students and families, to show others the work that goes on at Dovestones, and so students can remember what they have been doing. The group worked for seven weeks to come up with their own ideas and write their stories. Alex Rewcastle from the group said: “It has been a good thing to do because we have all done this together.” Alex Rewcastle: Chairperson 1 4

  2. Duke of Edinburgh - Picking up an Award A great experience Students at Dovestones have been cleaning rubbish from a local park to make it nicer for wildlife and people. A team of students from the college, who are working towards their Duke of Edinburgh award go to Stamford Park Ashton town centre and Memorial Gardens, near the college, every Wednesday to litter pick. They use gloves, litter pickers and bin bags. Josh Greene, from the team, said: “It’s nice to give something back to the community. But it’s important we wrap up warm.” Student Philip Service helps out at a charity shop as part of work experience. Philip, who is 18, has been helping out at the Wooden Canal Boat Society charity shop in Ashton. On Monday mornings, Philip goes to the shop in Ashton town centre, to help with dusting, cleaning shelves and sorting out items. Philip has gained independence, new skills and learns how work in a shop is done. He said: “I look forward to going to the charity shop because I like it there.” Coffee Shop Come along and visit our coffee shop. We are open from 10.15am to 11.15am, on Fridays. Enjoy drinks, toast and other snacks. Find us at A16. 3 2
