  13. The Jesuits’ Influence * They helped to right some of the abuses of the church and helped the poor and sick. * They spread the Catholic faith to Africa, Asia, and the Americas. * They founded influential schools/universities that were attended by dukes, emperors and cardinals.

  14. The Council of Trent Why would it be important to make sure that everyone in the Catholic Church reform their ways?

  15. The Council of Trent * First Council of Trent was called by Pope Paul III in 1545 and met over the course of 20 year. * It stated that good works and fulfillment of the sacraments (confession, baptism, communion, etc) were needed for salvation in addition to faith. * It banned the sale of indulgences and established punishments for breaking religious vows. * It also states that priests must be 25, educated and trained.

  16. The Inquisition What do your remember about the Inquisition and how do you think it will be used by the Catholic church this time?

  17. The Inquisition * The church used the Inquisition as a way to enforce its reforms. * Suspects were questioned, tortured and sometimes put to death. * Primary victims of the Inquisition were Protestant living in Catholic lands along with Jews and Muslims. * They created the Index of Forbidden books - books written by Protestant authors, which were banned by the church.
