  1. ArgumentativeEssay Doing the KD!

  2. The Art of Persuasion The purpose of writing a persuasive essay is to put together a strong, argument that attempts to convince the reader to agree with your thesis/argument.

  3. Argue This! A strong argument stays on topic, sticks to one viewpoint and contains strong evidence (facts, statistics…not opinions).

  4. Good Persuasion: Takes a strong position on an issue. Gives logical reasons and supporting evidence. Considers opposing views…but also explains the flaws (makes your argument stronger) Has enthusiasm and energy from start to finish.

  5. Persuasive Essay Outline

  6. The Introduction should… Introduce the topic. Inform the reader of your point of view! Entice the reader to continue with the rest of the paper! Focus on three main points to develop

  7. Introduction Format 1st Sentence-opening statement. -interesting hook readers into the essay. 2nd-3rd sentences background information. 4th-5th sentences The thesis or arguments about your topic.

  8. Introduction paragraph: With every glutinous orange glob we gobble, Kraft Dinner epitomizes everything that’s gone wrong with the millennial mealtime (opening sentence). It may be the opinion of just one frenzied working mom, but the beginning of the end of family dining started in 1937, when this mushy mixture was introduced as “a meal for four in nine minutes,” (background information). And as our love affair with such quick cuisine has grown, so has our collective girth-leaving more than half of us overweight and overfed, largely on such pre-processed packaged cuisine, (thesis/argument).

  9. Body Paragraphs The body paragraphs will provide details of the topic in a logical manner. 1stsentence first argument 2ndsentence evidence for argument 3rd sentence  importance of evidence 4th sentence transition sentence for next paragraph

  10. Body Paragraph 1 First, let’s sock it to KD, (as it has become known in pop culture), for its obvious nutritional deficiencies. (All figures apply to the mixture prepared with the requisite 2 percent milk and butter). It’s high in salt, containing 198 milligrams per serving. But without the salt and sodium phosphates for preservatives, how to impart flavour and a near-eternal shelf life to “modified milk ingredients”?If you are wondering how the pasty pasta gets its cheesy golden glow, check out the last line in the ingredients: “contains tartrazine.” That’s the food colouring linked to rashes and other reactions among sensitive types.

  11. Body Paragraph #2 Next, look at the fat content. At a time when researchers are finding kids getting flabbier on diets floating in fat, with arteries clogged before they reach 12, one measly serving of KD may have about 15 percent of their recommended daily fat intake. Kids who want second helpings may get almost a third of their daily fat intake.Which brings us to KD’s more sinister side: the makers’ bid in gloss over with marketing the product’s value as near Number One in the nutritional wasteland-with most of this marketing aimed at kids.

  12. Body Paragraph #3 Besides the games, web sites, contests, toys and prizes, Kraft offers Pokémon KD, DC Super Heroes KD, Bugs Bunny & Friends KD, and Rug rats KD. The idea is to sneak the grainy gruel into the kitchen cupboard under the guise of ease and convenience, while grabbing unsuspecting youngsters with the hard sell in commercials and out-of-the-box gimmicks. As an ad executive once opined, if you can get ‘em before age five, they’re consumers for life!”

  13. Body Paragraph #4 KD is quick, it’s easy- it almost makes itself, the ads scream. But, do we really need a product like this when less than two-thirds of Canadian households with children report they have a main meal together on weekdays? This perpetuates the disposable lifestyle of families sitting glazed in front of the TV, scarfing down a dinner dish of KD, nary a word of conversation or wholesome family debate.

  14. Concluding sentence Restates, (in different words), the argument of the essay.

  15. Conclusion I am sick and tired of fighting the battle against KD and that other kid-friendly competitor’s product (rhymes with macaroni, starts with beef). Sadly, as case after case gets sold and child after child (mine included) clamours for more, I fear I am on the losing side. (this one is a bit weak!)

  16. Rebuttal This is an argument made to diminish the power of the “other side” or theories that are against the author’s beliefs. The purpose is to make the essay much stronger!
