  5. Warren G. Harding • Elected in 1921 • Tea Pot Dome Scandal • Naval oil reserves in Wyoming are transferred from Dept. of Navy to Dept. of Interior • Sec. of Interior Albert Fall leases lands to Sinclair Oil • Leads to Senate investigation • Fall guilty of bribery goes to prison for one year

  6. Calvin Coolidge • Replaces Harding after his death in 1923 • Will reside in Office during America’s most prosperous decade

  7. 18th Amendment • Jan. 17, 1920 • Temperance Movement leads to 18th Amendment • Illegal to purchase or transfer alcohol

  8. Crime • 1920’s will see the rise of the mafia • Bootlegging alcohol • Speakeasies • Illegal places to drink

  10. Stock Market • Investments rise • Buying on Margin • Taking out loans to buy stock • Corporate investment • Banks, municipals, etc. invest money into stock market • Unprecedented rise

  11. Easy Life • New Products make life easier • Refrigerators • Washing machines • Vacuums • Radio • Suddenly the world is connected • Cars • Ford Model T • The populace travels

  12. Herbert Hoover • Elected in 1929 • Landside victory • Prosperity of 20’s helps republican party stay in control • Will keep it going and make it better • Though middle-class is large still huge poor class • South and mid-west • Farmers have it tough
