  5. Today’s objective: • When you have completed this investigation, you should be able to analyze the relationship between the earth and the moon in order to describe the force that causes tides.

  6. We will take Cornell notes on the following on page 29 : • Tides • Gravity

  7. Tides • The rise and fall of the level of water in the ocean. • Caused by the gravity of the moon and the sun pulling at the earth’s waters.

  8. Gravity • The attractive force between two objects; its magnitude depends on their masses and the distance between them.

  9. Spring tide • Created when the moon, earth, and sun line up in a straight line and the combined forces of gravity create a tide with the greatest difference between high and low tides. • Created when the moon is new or full.

  10. Neap tide • When the moon, earth, and sun create a right angle causing the sun’s gravitational pull to be at right angles to the moon’s…this produces a tide with the least difference between low an high tides. • Created when the moon is at first and third quarter positions.
