  2. Differences • A. Economic – • The South was dependent • on cotton farming and slaves. • The North was dependent on • manufacturing and • cheap labor.

  3. B. PoliticalThe federal government built the infrastructure (roads and railroads, bridges, etc.) for the North. The South had to provide their own.

  4. The South had to pay high tariffs on imported goods they needed. The North didn’t need as many imports so they didn’t worry about high tariffs. Why should we southerners have to pay such high tariffs on imports?!

  5. States rights: the South believed they should make their own decisions (ex: choose to be a free state or a slave state) State Government Federal Government

  6. SocialSlavery was outlawed in the north but not in the south.

  7. Slavery was vital to the economy of the South because it was free labor.

  8. Slavery had existed in Texas since Stephen F. Austin and the “Old Three Hundred.”

  10. Mass production in the South: Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin that enabled slaves to process cotton faster. $ equals plus
