Biography

Hayao Miyazaki is Japanese, he is 71.

He lives in Tokyo.

His childhood was marked by World War II,

so some of his works take a little inspiration from this.

He directs and designs creates animated films.

In 1985, he founded Studio Ghibli. Totoro is the mascot.

Miyazaki often uses the same themes like the relationship between humans and nature, ecology and technology, and the difficulty of staying pacifist in a world at war.

The heroes of Miyazaki’s films are children or teenagers.

He explains that when he imagines his characters,

the characters are always children.

which connects to the flying island.

Sophie, aged 18, has worked in

a hat shop. She met Hauru the Magician.

A jealous witch casts a spell on Sophie

and transforms her into a 90-year-old woman.

Sophie runs away. By chance, she enters

the castle of Hauru and gets hired as a housekeeper.

Calcifer, the fire spirit that feeds the house thinks she was the victim of a spell.

It will help if she break the

bond that unites Hauru and Calcifer.
