  1. Utilization of a Web Map Service and Mobile Device technology by SSEC Preliminary development and future needs. Developed and presented by: Dave Parker, Sam Batzli, Russ Dengel, Nick Bearson, Bill Bellon, Dave Santek, Tim Olander

  2. SSEC WMS Capability –Acknowledgements • Thanks to the Directors for funding this project • Because of this: • Project funded for PAW • Other projects [SNAAP, Tropical Cyclone project, WisconsinView, various small pots of money]

  3. SSEC WMS Capability –Motivation • Provide SSEC scientists and programmers an EASY method of presenting imagery and data that is powerful, easy to use, and compatible with smart phone technology and modern browsers and platforms • Information can be presented on geo-located displays (Google Earth/Maps), with capability to animate, overlay, and interrogate various data types (imagery, grid, and/or point data) simultaneously

  4. SSEC WMS Capability – Statement of Concept • Why do this? • Will put SSEC/CIMSS on forefront for utilization of new technology and platforms • Upgrade or augment existing project web pages to be more “mobile friendly” • Allow for easier setup of new web pages and easier collaboration between different projects within or outside of SSEC

  5. SSEC WMS Capability –Background Information • Current public SSEC webpage users have requested certain information to be presented in more “mobile friendly” displays (e.g. Tropical Cyclones) • Improvements to existing mobile phone aimed products (e.g. PAW) need to be upgraded to improve resolutions and capabilities on latest smart phones • SSEC displays and products can be optimized for in-house users (i.e. project collaborations or at conferences/meetings), and public users (i.e. aviation community, state/local government, private businesses, etc)

  6. SSEC WMS Capability –Background Information • What is the Web Map Service (WMS)? • User submitted geo-located imagery (e.g. GeoTIFF) or data field products (point or gridded data) • WMS handles geographic information and will tile images as necessary for optimized display on a wide range of devices • The use of Javascript on the client (mobile devices, desktop browser, etc.) allows for animation of images and any number of overlay products (either locally or remotely served)

  7. SSEC WMS Capability –Background Information • What is the Web Map Service (WMS)? • Standards-based data publishing • Data viewable on all WMS-capable software: ArcGIS, Matlab, IDL, McIDAS-V, qGIS • Display output in Google Maps/Earth • Viewable in a simple browser • And, we have developed our own tools to make data access easier and adaptable to future display technologies

  9. SSEC WMS Capability –Demonstration • Demonstration of the WMS …a (moving) picture is worth a thousand words(^2)!!!

  10. SSEC Smart Phone Capability –Prototypes • Smart Phone apps • Notification system developed to send an email, text message, and Apple/Android notification for real-time events. Implemented for severe weather events. • iPhone app developed to receive notification of severe weather. This triggers a request to the WMS to display the latest radar with severe weather location, area coverage, etc.

  11. SSEC Smart Phone Capability –Prototypes

  12. SSEC WMS Capability – Funding sources • NOAA End-of-Year funding for PAW to interface with WMS • SNAAP • Tropical Cyclone • Proposal being written for GOES-R Risk Reduction • Investigating the usability of mobile device app for storm spotters • Digital Cyclone/Garmin interested in unique satellite products

  13. SSEC WMS Capability – Future Direction and Needs • Continue to develop new tools to augment and enhance current WMS capabilities • Develop directory structure to WMS to allow for better organization of all SSEC products • Provide guide for data producers • Provide Administrators’ Guide so WMS can be installed anywhere

  14. SSEC WMS Capability – Future Direction and Needs • Will most likely require additional computational power and space to handle data volume and server requests • Two servers are needed; currently using systems in the Data Center • Ongoing maintenance (Data Center?) • Mobile devices • Using the SSEC iPhone • Considering development on Android-based phone • Other testing platforms (pads)

  15. SSEC WMS Capability –Scaling-up WMS Server SSEC Data www Server(cache) WMS Server www Server(cache) Process,Manage,Store SSEC Data GeoTIFF shapefile KML PostGIS netCDF McIDAS AREA
