  2. WARM-UP • Turn to the Political Party tab in your notebook 2) You should have the Cover page, a blank sheet of paper and the vocab page in that section 3) On the blank sheet of paper labeled “Warm-ups” answer the following question: What are political parties?

  4. SO… what is a Political Party? It is NOT a real party!! 

George Washington did not want political parties to develop. • Political parties are: • Association of voters with common interests • Want to get their candidate into office • Share beliefs about politics and gov’t roles • Persuade voters 3) You do not have to pay dues, take a test or vote to be a member of a political party

  12. 4. There are only 2 major parties that run our government 5. The 2 major parties are the Democrats and the Republicans

  15. 7 and 8. Two rival groups formed during Washington’s administration led by Hamilton and Jefferson. They disagreed on how the government should run Alexander Hamilton Thomas Jefferson

  16. 9. Alexander Hamilton believed in : - individual rights- strong national government- president should have more power Federalist

  17. Thomas Jefferson wanted: - individual rights- limit the power of the national government- more power to the states Republican

  18. 10. Thomas Jefferson’s Democrat- Republicans broke apart to become just the Democratic Party under Andrew Jackson. 11. A group broke off from the Democrats and the Whig parties over slavery in 1854. Abraham Lincoln was the 1st Republican president in 1860.
