  1. Valuing BiodiversityPamela Kaval Coastal marine eco-system

  2. FRST Project – Brian, Geoff, Basil, Frank, and I • Valuing Biodiversity is a priority for BNZ • Our goal – the form a base model BNZ can use • How: Study an alien invasive relevant to BNZ • Basil and Geoff – Wilding Conifers in high country • Brian and I – European shore crab in coastal marine ecosystem • Current BNZ Project: marine value mapping

  3. FRST Project • 2 Phases: • 1. Ecological and Market Values • 2. Non-market values

  4. Phase 1: • Ecological Changes and Market Values • Ecologist • Categorize habitats • Match invasive to niche areas • What niche areas affected • Determine physical changes to niche area • Use this to determine economical changes • Ex: moki fish extinct in area – loss to fishery • Ex: seals – sea urchin – kelp example

  5. Phase 2: • Non-market Values • NZ Resident Biodiversity Values

  6. Case studies: • Attribute surveys: • Use values • Non use values • Ecosystem Service values

  7. Tools • Choice modelling • What is important to people?
