  3. Watch vs. Warning • A watch is when conditions are favorable for producing severe weather. • A warning is when severe weather has been observed or indicated on radar.

  4. Winter Storms • Winter storms can include blizzards, sleet, wind chills, and snow. During a winter storm you need to be careful of frostbite and hypothermia. Frostbite is the loss of feeling and pale appearance of the fingers, toes, nose, or ear lobes.

  6. Thunderstorms • A severe thunderstorm is defined as a thunderstorm that contains hail that is at least ¾ of an inch in diameter, and/or winds that are 58 mph or greater, and/or tornadoes. • The United States has around 100,000 thunderstorms a year, producing 20 million lightening strikes.

  7. Tornadoes • A tornado is a violent rotating column of air extending from a cloud to the surface of the earth. • Tornadoes are usually produced by severe thunderstorms. • The United States has the highest number of tornadoes in a year with 1,000 per year.

  8. Floods • Flooding can occur when there is a chance of rain for a long period of time. • Floods are the most common and widespread of all natural disasters. • Each year floods cause billions of dollars of damage.
