  1. Overarching Question: How does energy from the sun impact Earth’s atmosphere and drive weather? Goal: To draw a diagram of the four layers of Earth’s atmosphere and examine the properties used to distinguish the layers of the atmosphere.

  2. What’s going on in this picture?

  3. Drawing the layers of the atmosphere • Draw the Earth by tracing a penny in the center of page 84 of your science notebook.

  4. Drawing the layers of the atmosphere • Measure 16 mm from surface of the Earth and place a dot in 4 to 5 places. Connect the dots to make the first layer of the atmosphere. Label this layer Troposphere. 16 mm

  5. Drawing the layers of the atmosphere • Measure 48 mm from surface of the Earth and place a dot in 4 to 5 places. Connect the dots to make the second layer of the atmosphere. Label this layer Stratosphere. 48 mm

  6. Drawing the layers of the atmosphere • Measure 80 mm from surface of the Earth and place a dot in 4 to 5 places. Connect the dots to make the third layer of the atmosphere. Label this layer Mesosphere. 80 mm

  7. Drawing the layers of the atmosphere Thermosphere • The rest of the page is the last layer of the atmosphere is the thermosphere. Label this layer Thermosphere. Mesosphere Stratosphere Troposphere
