Mount Rushmore

  • Originally wanted to sculpt “western heroes” like Buffalo Bill Cody

  • Instead chose Washington, Jefferson, T. Roosevelt, and Lincoln

  • Black Hills region of South Dakota


Statue of Liberty

  • Robed female figure representing Libertas(Roman goddess of freedom)

  • Designers decided not to have her hold a broken chain since it was too soon after the Civil War. Instead chain lies at her feet.

  • Gift of the French to the United States

  • Has towered over the New York Harbor since 1886.


Lincoln Memorial

  • Greets you at the top of a flight of stairs

  • Opposite end of the National Mall; Overlooks the Reflecting Pool, Washington Monument, and Capitol Hill

  • Open hand, closed fist

  • One foot forward, one foot back
