  2. Procedure • A speculum is inserted into the vagina • A catheter is then inserted into the cervix • Contrast material is injected into the uterine cavity through the catheter • Fluoroscopic images are then taken

  3. Uses of Hysterosaplingography • Most commonly used to evaluate patients with difficulty becoming pregnant or with frequent miscarriages • Used to evaluate uterine abnormalities • Congenital uterine anomalies • Fibroids or tumor masses • Adhesions • Used to evaluate tubal patency • Following tubal ligation reversal procedure • Following pelvic inflammatory disease

  4. Risks and Benefits • Minimally invasive procedure with rare complications • Can provide valuable information regarding infertility or problems carrying a fetus to term • Minimal exposure to radiation • Effective radiation dose ~ 1 mSv (comparable to average amount of background radiation over 4 mo) • Should not be performed if patient is pregnant at the time of the procedure
