EU Accession • CR applied for EU membership on 23 January 1996. • Negotiation process in the area of environment initiated by the submission of the Position Paper of the Czech Republic to the EU in July 1999. • Negotiation process on the Chapter 22 was preliminary closed on 1 June 2001. • Accession Treaty signed on April 2003 • Referendum on the EU accession took place on 13 and 14 June 2003 (77% in favour; 55% participation). • EU accession on 1 May 2004

EU Accession • June 2002 – 1st Peer Review by EC (water, IPPC, EIA, nature protection) • July 2003 – 2nd Peer Review by EC (water, IPPC) • April 2004 “7th Progress Monitoring Report” Support from EU: Phare, ISPA • Institutional building - assistance from Phare programme (twinning projects,investments, TA)

  4. EU Accession Main strategic documents: • Implementation Plan in the field of Environment (last update in January 2004) • Framework Financing Strategy of investment ensuring implementation of EC legislation • State Environmental Policy

EU Accession Three transitional periods: • Directive 91/271/EEC on urban wastewater treatment (t.p. until 31 December 2010) • Directive 94/62/EC on packaging and packaging waste (t.p. until 31 December 2005) • Directive 2002/80/EC on the limitation of emissions of certain pollutants into the air from large combustion plants
