  1. Themes.

  2. You do. • Name and justify ONE theme from whale rider, based on the work you have just finished doing about Raiwiri and his travels.

  3. Tradition. • Tradition is a very big theme in this story. • KoroApirana’s stubbornness about his traditions almost causes the downfall of the tribe. • How? What’s the fancy word that explains this?

  4. Nanny Flowers and her traditions support Kahu. This part of the theme is show to the audience through the character relations of these 3. • Using your notes, explain what I mean by this.

  5. The tribe departed from tradition (trying to adapt to the modern world, slaughtering and eating whales which are tapu to the tribe), and it has been in decline ever since. KoroApirana is trying to resurrect some of the traditions so that the traditions of the tribe are not lost forever. • List the things KoroApirana does/is involved in that show he is trying to save Maori Traditions.

  6. There are elements of the plot that highlight this. • List as many as you can think of. (including the one I’ve already given you, on the previous slide…that’s a hint by the way.)

  7. KoroApirana takes the initial stranding of the whales as sign that tribe has to return to its’ roots. • Why? Find quote(s) to support this.

  8. However, when the whales strand at the marae, his strict adherence to tradition is what almost causes the loss of the whales, and the link with the mythic that they represent. • What of his traditions am I referring to?

  9. In this, the whales are symbolic of the loss of tradition that Maori have experienced as a result of trying to assimilate to European culture. • What do I mean by this?
