  3. 1755 Born in New York, New York 1778 Works as sexton at John Street Church 1783 Sold by master to John Street Church 1785 Purchases his freedom from John Street Church 1795 Leads split from John Street Church 1796 Establishes African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church; receives certificate of freedom 1800 Registers church charter 1823 Dies, probably in New York City, in February Life story
