Survey Purpose & Methodology • 8th annual “State of the CIO” survey conducted to help understand: • How the role of the CIO continues to evolve • What impact today’s business climate is having • Where the CIO agenda is heading in 2009. • Survey administered online from 9/2/08 through 9/17/08 • 506 responses from CIOs and heads of IT at midsized to large companies

Respondent Profile • All 506 respondents are the top IT executive at their company or business unit. • 70% hold a CIO/CTO title, 15% general manager/managing director/director, 10% EVP/SVP/VP and 5% other. • Respondents are from a broad range of industries: • Education/non-profit (12%), government (12%), manufacturing (10%), healthcare (10%), wholesaler/retailer/distributor (9%), and finance/banking/accounting (7%). • 92% of respondents are responsible for enterprise-wide IT and 8% responsible for divisional IT at their organizations.

Conclusions • CIOs have arrived to the Executive Suite as IT has steadily evolved to BT (Business Technology). • Yet IT needs to extend to the end customer if CIOs truly want to be seen as delivering business value. • Innovation versus operational cost-cutting/risk mitigation will be big challenges in 2009. • Some huge disparities still exist between IT and business priorities. • How will the unprecedented challenges of a global recession impact these differences?
