Runner-up: Rosie Barlak with 500 requisitions. (Hurray for BIOs!) 2. How many results are currently stored in EMS today? • 90,000 (b) 900,000 (c ) 9.0 Million (d) 90 Million (e) 900 Million A: (c)9.0 Million (An increase of 400,000 results from last year) 3. A: (a)37,500 Up from 35,000 last year. (~ 2500 new stations are created annually.)

  3. Current Challenges with EMS • Complex Coding Schemes confounded by suiting multiple business areas • Lack of regular formal training and current documentation • Difficulties with EDT (Electronic Data Transfer) Data uploading

  4. Budget Issues • Lack of Budget • Especially operational

  5. Staffing • Aging workforce • Retirements • Larger over 65 workforce • Regional Support and Training • Downsizing over time • More co-ordination needed between Regions and HQ • New Regional Model

  7. Results of High-Level Needs Analysis 1. EDT Software Requirement Specifications • New technology for interface, reverse compatible (able to accept old file format) • Modern standard exchange file formats like XML • Immediate feedback on upload file's QA • Simplified ERROR and WARNING messages 2. Monitoring Location Creation Software Requirement Specifications • Users can create and edit sites in multiple regions • Map-based interface so location co-ordinates easier to confirm visually • This will allow site creation prior to visiting site and obtaining it's LAT/LONG by GPS • Can update with precise GPS LAT/LONG after returning from sampling 3. Requisition Form Software Requirement Specifications • New technology for interface, possibly a PDF you can save • Multiple Sites per Requisition • Option for Electronic Requisition Submission to lab • Option to print sample bottle labels • Prototype created for Split Sampling Requisition Form 4. EMS Web Reporting Refresh • Bring up to modern standards and make Web Reporting the preferred data portal

  8. Project Timeline  1. Project Charter/Kick-off (Sept 2008)  2.Conceptual/High-Level Requirements (March 2009)  3. Detailed Requirements Phase (March 2010) • 4. Design Phase (March 2011) • 5. Build (March 2012)

  9. Requirements and Design Work in 2010 3. Detailed Requirements Phase (completed March 2010) • Requisitions Requirements • EDT Requirements • Monitoring Locations Requirements • EMSWR Java Upgrade 4.Design Phase (In Progress) • EMSWR Re-design • EDT Design (Will be completed March 2011) • Requisition Pilot • Monitoring Locations Interface

  10. Recent EMS Improvements • 2010 has been a busy year of preparing Detailed Requirements and Design for Re-development based on the Conceptual Requirements elicited in 2009 • All software maintenance budget for EMS has been allocated to Re-development thus there have been no improvementsto our existing EMS system in Fiscal 2010/11

  11. EMS Trivia 1. How many unique parameters exist in the result data in EMS? • 342 (b) 2541 (c) 872 (d) 1426 (e) 120 A: (c) 872 871 last year. (There are 1571 parameters in the parameter dictionary; almost 700 have never been used.) 2. What is the single most measured/analyzed parameter since Jan 2010? A: pH Followed by: Residue non-filterable, Temp, Flow Avg, Specific Conductance • Which region has the most sites with no lat/longs? A: Runners Up: Omineca Peace (2nd largest #), Van Island (2nd highest %) A: Winner: Lower Mainland (1354 = 24% with no lat/longs) 4. Which region has the least sites with no lat/longs?? A: Runner Up: Kootenays (64 = 2.6%) (No change from last year.) A: Winner: Cariboo (only 30 = 1.3%) – however, how many are fake? 5. Which Business Area has the most fake or suspectlat/longs since 2010? (a) EPOs (b) BIOs (c) Water Techs (d) Air Techs (e) 120 A: EPOs (Mostly sites created in AMS, which automatically creates the site in EMS.)

  12. EMS Update Summary • Our focus is on investing in new technology and supporting the core components • EMS as a central data storage point helps preserve corporate memory

  13. The Future of EMS • Environmental Sampling is a core service • We hope funding levels will be maintained in order to follow through with this project SUPERHEROS 2975 Jutland • INVESTING in automated systems and retaining experts • User-friendly interfaces empowering staff to save the planet with greater efficiency!
