  2. The Team • Industrial Engineers • Andrew Chorney (Project Manager) • Tim Bukowski • Jason Hess • Mechanical Engineers • Michael Goldberg (Lead Engineer) • Martin Martinez • Electrical Engineer • Mahmudul Khan • Faculty Guide • John Wellin • Risa Robinson • Customer • Dr. Caroline Delong

  3. Project Description • Design an apparatus that will be used to present three-dimensional objects to a beluga whale. • Develop a functioning match-to-sample procedure. • Design 3-D Objects. • A sample object is shown to the whale, then the sample object is removed and finally three choice objects are presented to the whale. • The whale’s task is to select the choice object that matches the sample. • Tool for research with Beluga whales at Mystic Aquarium. • Assess the Beluga whale’s visual and auditory perception.

  4. Key Challenges • Mystic Aquarium located in Connecticut • Team communication • Budget and Time • Salt water • Objects must be immune to rust • Durable for up to 12 months • Limited space inside of aquarium • Portability of apparatus and objects

  5. Expectations from Design Review • Feedback about feasibility of design • Issues that could prevent success of project • Comments on mechanical and electrical system design • Potential risks not already mitigated • Customer final approval of design direction • Design, budget, schedule • Critique of technical content of design • Calculations, component selection • Negative feedback! Be mean! • Possible alternative methods and ideas
