  2. Map Elements Essential Question Are maps still relevant and how do we use them?

  3. In this lesson you will: • Learn about the elements of a map: latitude, longitude, the hemispheres, directions, time zone, scale, and map legends.

  4. Latitude and Longitude • The earth is divided into lines called latitude and longitude.

  5. Lines • Longitude lines = north and south. • Latitude lines = east and west. • The lines measure distances in degrees. Latitude Longitude

  6. Where is 0 degree? • The equator is 0 degree latitude. • It is the halfway point between the North Pole and the South Pole. Equator

  7. P R I M E M E R I D I A N Where is 0 degree? • The prime meridian is 0 degrees longitude.

  8. Hemispheres • By using the equator and prime meridian, we can divide the world into four hemispheres, north, south, east, and west.

  9. Religions Legend Map Legends • The legend shows what the map is used for. Objects or colors in the legend represent something on the map.

  13. Compass • A compass is a tool that helps find direction. • On a map, a compass rose helps the user locate these directions.

  14. Compass Rose Activity • Create a compass rose to help answer the questions about the following map. • Place your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

  15. Compass Rose • The needle on a compass is magnetized to point to the earth's north magnetic pole.   16. Directions • The main directions are north, south, east, and west. • The intermediate directions are northeast, southeast, southwest and northwest. • They help describe the location of places in relation to other places.

  17. Create your own map! • Create a map from your house to OKMS. • The following elements need to be included on your map • Title • Compass Rose • Legend • You must show at least 3 landmarks
