  3. 1st Cause: Militarism • Definition: An aggressive build-up of armed forces to intimidate & threaten other nations • Militarism appeared as naval arms race b/t Germany and G.B. • Germany challenged naval dominance of G.B. by building a modern navy

  4. Militarism (cont.) • G.B. depended on naval strength for protection & survival • G.B. felt need for add’lprotection from threat of new German Fleet • Formed loose alliance w/ France and Russia

  5. 2nd Cause: Alliance System • After being created (1781), Germany attacked & defeated France, taking territory along border (Alsace-Lorraine) • (Result: France & Germany now enemies) • For protection, Germany signed alliances w/ Italy and Austria-Hungry (became Triple Alliance)

  6. Alliance System (cont.) • Russia signed alliance w/ France –why? • 1) feared attack by Germany • 2) tensions w/ Austria-Hungry over Slavic people in Balkans • Triple Entente (Allies): Britain, France, Russia, Italy (1915)

  7. 3rd Cause: Imperialism • Definition: Pol. & Econ. domination of a Stronger nation over a weaker nation • By 1913, most of world’s surface had been acquired by European Imperial Powers (GB, France, Germany) • Result: Increased competition for resources + markets among Imperial Powers

  8. 4th Cause: Nationalism • Definition: feeling of intense pride of one’s homeland • Balkan people/region ruled by Austria-Hungary and/or Ottoman Empires • Spread of nationalism caused Slavic people to want independence

  9. Nationalism (cont.) • Serbia gained independence, but not rest of Slavic people (e.g. Bosnians) • Serbia determined to free other Slavic people (believed it was self-determination) • Self-determination: idea that people who belong to a nation should have their own country and gov’t
