  3. Functions of mouth The first part of digestive system wherein mastication occur. It receives food (ingestion) and break up the food into smaller pieces (digestion). Takes part in respiration as well as in speech production Lastly it conveys emotion

  4. External Mouth • Composed primarily of the upper and lower lips • Lips separate from the skin by vermillion border

  6. Internal Mouth Divided into 2 parts: • Oral vestibule • Oral cavity proper

  7. The Oral vestibule A slit like space bounded: Laterally by cheek and lips Medially by the buccal and labial surfaces of the upper and lower teeth Posteriorly by the retromolararea

Salivary Glands • Parotid Gland: • the largest of the 3 salivary gland • Located anterior to the ear, extending from the cheek bone up to the lower jaw • Parotid or Stensens’ duct opens at the oral vestibule opposite upper second molar 2. Submandibular gland: • Located at the floor of the mouth posteriorly • Whartons’ duct opens at the sublingual caruncle 3. Sublingual gland: • Located at the floor of the mouth anteriorly • The numerous ducts of SL gland open at the sublingual fold
