  1. Five Star chapter development 2013 Spring Regional Convention

  2. What is 5 Star Chapter Development?(and why is it important) • A guide to help build strong, active chapters • Reflects the scholarly ideas of Phi Theta Kappa • Serves as blueprint to earning local, regional, and international recognition • Helps enhance working relationship with college administration • Educates chapter members and officers in the importance of deadlines and organizational skills

  3. Why does PTK care about our chapter’s progress? • Phi Theta Kappa is only as strong as its chapters. If the chapters don’t have what they need to build and grow, then PTK doesn’t build and grow. • By utilizing the Five Star Development Plan, you have a roadmap you can use to help build up your chapter, enhance your relationship with the college, and earn some pretty great awards as well.

  4. … and winning awards is always nice.

  5. YOU set your goals and then track your progress Via PTK.org, you’ll set your goals for your chapter and then track them throughout the year. You can also keep track of your progress via a poster that is sent to each chapter by headquarters.

  6. How do we start? • The first thing you want to do is set a goal. It doesn’t have to be a huge goal. It just needs to be something for you to work towards during the year and have measureable objectives. • Having the Program requirements handy helps in setting the goal as well as planning your calendar for the year since some items may only happen a few times a year – or less – and if you miss them, you may have missed a chance at a star.

  7. One Star Chapter While it may be the first step, it is the most important step. This is where you set the foundation for your chapter for the year. This level is all about building a membership base, getting out the word about your chapter, and setting goals.

  8. One Star Requirements • Requirements at this level include: • Reviewing the Five Star Chapter Development Plan and setting a goal • Setting a membership recruitment goal • Building awareness through posters and press releases • Have an enrollment period each academic term • Send out invitations to eligible members • Conduct an informational meeting for prospective members • Hold an induction ceremony and report members’ names • Advisors submit an annual report

  9. One Star Chapter • These requirements give you the basic stepping stones you need to build and grow your chapter • They also help to promote PTK and the benefits of membership on your campus • For many chapters, membership dues are their primary fundraiser, so building this solid foundation helps to increase membership and give the chapter the funds it needs for local, regional, and international activities Every chapter should try to at a minimum set a One Star Goal!

  10. Two Star Chapter At the two star level, we bring in a new focus on the Honors Program as well as the development of officers and a stronger focus on membership. There’s also a growing focus on officers and the need to meet regularly together and with your advisor.

  11. Two Star Requirements • Requirements at this level include: • At this level, you’d hold at least two membership recruitment campaigns. • New officers will be reported to PTK • Officers will be trained and will meet at least twice a month • At least two officers research one theme/question from the Honors Program Guide • Chapter advisor(s) and officers meet with the college president or other administrator to develop and discuss chapter goals

  12. Three Star Chapter At the three star level, we become more involved in the Honors in Action program, including the addition of an Honors in Action Project. In addition to planning and implementing a HiA project, the chapter will also implement a College Project, which helps to benefit their campus.

  13. Three Star Requirements • Requirements at this level include: • The chapter will plan an HiA project based on the research, including both leadership and service components • Leadership roles and actions for the project are mapped out • Expert resources needed are determined • Coordination with a campus or community organization to help implement the Project.

  14. Three Star Requirements • To help get the word out about the activities of the chapter, the chapter will use a newsletter, web site, Facebook page, and/or news in a publication to get the word out • The chapter will also chronicle the activities for historical purposes.

  15. Four Star Chapter At the four star level, we move from activities on our campuses and local communities and out working on a regional level. Our region encompasses Oregon, Utah, and Southern Idaho and includes 25 chapters. By working together, we gain new insight, make new friends and connections, and accomplish more than we would alone.

  16. Four Star Chapter Why is being involved at the regional level so important? • It encourages fellowship between chapters • It gives everyone a chance to share ideas and learn from others • It helps build a strong region, which helps to support all the chapters • Trainings such as Tillamook Toolkit and the Fall Honors in Action Conference

  17. Four Star Requirements • Requirements at this level include: • Attend at least one official regional meeting • Be involved at the regional level (campaign for office, host a regional meeting, participate in a regional honors in action project or collaborate with at least two other chapters on an activity) • Share the chapter’s HiA research with the campus or community • Enter at least one regional awards category

  18. Five Star Chapter At the five star level we move beyond local and regional activities, and on to International. By being involved at the International level, we can learn from chapters all over the world, hear from exceptional speakers, and have the chance to win awards at the highest level in Phi Theta Kappa.

  19. Five Star Requirements • Requirements at this level include • Enter at least three Hallmark awards at the International level • Chapter representatives participate in at least one International activity, such as the International Convention, Honors Institute, or all of the following: College Fish, Competitive Edge, and the Honors Case Study Challenge

  20. FAQs • Do I have to do them in order? • No, you can do them in whatever order you want, as long as you complete the items by the end of the year. • What do we get for reaching at least one star? • Recognition from Phi Theta Kappa and a certificate • Who can submit our progress? • Any officer who has been reported to PTK gets access to make updates via your Chapter Officer Dashboard at PTK.org
