  4. Pharmacists understand about Drug Origins, Chemistry, Actions and Interactions: Biopharmacy, Physiology & Pharmacology Drug: L-Dopa Action on Target Side effects Maths and Chemistry of Metabolism & Secretion Absorbed & Distributed

  5. Pharmacists understand about Drug Origins, Chemistry, Actions and Interactions: Drug Discovery, Medicinal Chemistry & Drug Synthesis

  6. Pharmacists understand how best to deliver the drug: Formulation Science Glaucoma Cancer Research UK Formulation Unit: Licensed for manufacture of investigational medicines for clinical trials Ulcerative colitis

Pharmacists help patients to use medicines safely and effectively:Pharmaceutical Care & Pharmacy Practice: Training begins in Year 1 with our Teacher Practitioners and is aimed at introducing the effective use of medicines Even the most effective medicine can be useless/dangerous if inappropriately used

  8. What path do you follow to become a pharmacist?

The MPharm Programme (Master of Pharmacy) • The only route to becoming a pharmacist • 5 year Masters Level Pharmacy degree UK-wide – 4 years for applicants presenting Advanced Higher (overwhelming majority). • Followed by one year of paid pre-registration training (– under review) • After Pre-Reg: Examination & Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) • http://www.pharmacyregulation.org

Student support during the degree • Detailed electronic support for every class • Every student has a personal development advisor • Student health, academic, advisory and counselling services Strathclyde MPharm qualification is very well regarded, nationally and internationally (we have several overseas partnerships)

  11. What qualities and qualifications do you need to get on to the NEW MPharm program?

  12. What Higher/AH subjects are best for Pharmacy? Essential • Chemistry, Maths, Biology, English All required at Higher min B (typical applicant AABB+ from year 5 & sitting 2AH with eg Higher Biology if not already taken) Additional Pharmacy is science based. Success in other subjects will not substitute as evidence of the skills we require in these subjects. [2015;typically AABB+ at Higher 5th year) plus BB at Advanced Higher – Chemistry then Biology preferred. Maths or Physics accepted ] If school cannot provide AH Science, possibility of year 1 entry (AAAB at Higher)

  13. Additional Requirements • Satisfactory Disclosure Scotland clearance • Compliance with the Fitness to Practice regulations • Statement of good health • Work experience an advantage but not a requirement

  14. The state of competition • Stronger than ever in recent years • 800+ applicants for 130 places • More EU, graduate applicants, mature career changers, rejected medics, A-level applicants, • Fewer UOs in this current round as AH required • Legislative changes may alter competition level – Full fees for grads? Fees for other EU students? • If a student gets a CO they need to get the grades
