  1. Neutrinos Maury Goodman; Argonne QUARKNET summer institute July 24, 2002

  2. OUTLINE • Introduction to Particle Physics • A shortened version of a colloquium I recently gave, “The neutrino oscillation industry” at Rice University. Maury Goodman, ANL QUARKNET “Neutrinos”

  3. Quarks u up d down s strange c charm t top b bottom Leptons e electronne e-neutrino mmuonnm mu-neutrino ttaunt tau-neutrino The fundamental particles Maury Goodman, ANL QUARKNET “Neutrinos”

  4. Why Not teach the fundamental particles to middle schoolers? • Teachers don’t know it. • Easy to learn • Too hard. • 12/108ths of the periodic table • Funny names • Is “charm” funnier than “Osmium”? • Need quantum mechanics to understand. • Again the periodic table Maury Goodman, ANL QUARKNET “Neutrinos”

  5. My opinion on the reason(s) 1.) 6 of the 12 particles are not stable It seems obvious, but is in fact not true, that stability is a factor in which particles are fundamental. 2.) 9 of the 12 particles are not constituents of matter This is related to point 1. The other 3 are neutrinos. Are these conceptually really so hard? Maury Goodman, ANL QUARKNET “Neutrinos”
